Beyond the Beaches: An Adventure Traveler's Guide to Costa Rica

More Than a Beach Destination

Costa Rica has earned its reputation as one of the world's great adventure destinations — and for Canadians looking for something more active than a week of beach lounging, it's hard to beat. In a country smaller than Nova Scotia, you'll find active volcanoes, two coastlines, cloud forests, world-class wildlife, white-water rivers, and some of the most welcoming people you'll ever meet.

This isn't a country you visit. It's a country you experience. Here's how to make the most of an adventure-focused trip to Costa Rica.

Why Costa Rica Belongs on Every Adventure Traveler's List

Pura vida culture. The national motto translates to "pure life," and you'll feel it everywhere — in how locals greet you, the unhurried pace, and a national identity built around appreciating nature.

Incredible biodiversity. Costa Rica covers just 0.03% of the Earth's surface but hosts roughly 5% of its biodiversity. Sloths, monkeys, toucans, jaguars, sea turtles — they're all here.

Adventure variety. Surfing, hiking, white-water rafting, zip-lining, volcano climbs, scuba diving, wildlife safaris — pick any combination.

Easy access from Canada. Direct flights from Toronto, Montreal, and seasonal options from Calgary and Vancouver make this one of the easier adventure destinations to reach.

Established eco-tourism. Costa Rica was a pioneer in sustainable tourism, so guided experiences, lodges, and infrastructure are well-developed without feeling overrun.

Top Adventure Experiences

Hike Arenal Volcano

Arenal is Costa Rica's most iconic volcano — a near-perfect cone rising from the rainforest in the country's north-central region. Hiking trails wind through old lava flows and dense jungle, and the area is also home to natural hot springs heated by the volcano itself. Soaking in steaming, mineral-rich water under the stars after a day of hiking is one of those quintessential Costa Rica moments.

Walk the Cloud Forest in Monteverde

Monteverde's cloud forest sits high in the mountains, where moisture from the trade winds creates a permanent mist. Hanging bridges thread through the canopy, putting you eye-level with toucans, quetzals, and howler monkeys. For a more thrilling angle, zip-line through the canopy on some of the longest cables in Latin America.

Spot Wildlife in Corcovado

Corcovado National Park, on the remote Osa Peninsula, has been called one of the most biologically intense places on Earth. With a guide, you have a real chance of spotting all four species of Costa Rican monkey, sloths, scarlet macaws, tapirs, and — if you're very lucky — jaguars or pumas. This is bucket-list wildlife viewing.

White-Water Raft the Pacuare

The Pacuare River winds through pristine rainforest with class III and IV rapids, making it one of the top white-water rafting experiences in Central America. Multi-day trips include nights at remote eco-lodges accessible only by river — no cars, no Wi-Fi, just the sound of the jungle.

Surf or Learn to Surf

Costa Rica is one of the world's great surfing destinations, with waves for every level. The Nicoya Peninsula towns of Tamarindo, Nosara, and Santa Teresa offer everything from gentle beginner waves to advanced reef breaks, plus excellent surf schools.

Witness Sea Turtle Nesting

Depending on the season and coast, you can witness one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles: sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast (July to October) and Ostional on the Pacific (year-round, with mass arrivals during specific moon cycles) are the most reliable spots.

When to Go

Dry season (December–April): Peak season. Sunniest weather, but also the most crowded and expensive.

Green season (May–November): Wetter but lush, fewer crowds, lower prices, and the best wildlife viewing. Mornings are usually clear, with rain in the afternoons.

Shoulder seasons (May, November): Often the sweet spot — decent weather, lower prices, fewer tourists.

Planning Tips From Travelers Who've Been There

1.    Don't try to do too much. Costa Rica looks small, but driving times are long thanks to mountainous terrain. Two to three regions in a 7-10 day trip is plenty.

2.    Hire local guides. A knowledgeable guide will spot wildlife you'd walk right past, share cultural context, and dramatically improve your experience.

3.    Pack for everything. Hot, humid coast in the morning. Cool, misty cloud forest by afternoon. Bring layers, quick-dry clothes, real hiking shoes, and a rain jacket.

4.    Bring strong insect repellent. And use it. The bugs are part of the deal.

5.    Get travel insurance with adventure activity coverage. Standard plans sometimes exclude things like zip-lining, white-water rafting, or scuba diving. Confirm coverage matches your itinerary — your travel advisor can help.

6.    Stay in eco-lodges when you can. Some of the most memorable accommodations in Costa Rica are small eco-lodges in the middle of nature. They aren't always easy to find or book — this is where a travel advisor's relationships pay off.

Pura Vida, Indeed

Costa Rica delivers something rare in modern travel: the genuine sense that you've stepped into a different way of living. Days are slower. Nature is louder. People are warmer. You'll come home with stories — about the morning a sloth dropped a leaf on your head, the night you fell asleep to howler monkeys, the time you white-water rafted past a toucan.
